Buying guides
Work out what you need before you compare brands
The new puppy setup, without the wasted money
- 01Buy a flat collar and a lightweight harness now; save the no-pull harness until pulling actually starts.
- 02One washable bed for the first six months — puppies chew and leak. Orthopedic foam comes later.
- 03Two puzzle toys, rotated, beat a basket of squeaky plush.
- 04Pick a food you can buy locally for the next two years, then leave it alone.
The energetic walker: gear that survives the pulling phase
- 01Y-front harness with a steel front ring, fitted with two flat fingers of clearance.
- 02A 2m fixed lead, not a retractable — retractables teach constant tension.
- 03GPS tracker only if you walk off-lead near roads or livestock.
- 04Reflective trim you can actually see at 40 metres, tested at dusk.
The ageing dog: joints, grip and warmth
- 01Solid foam at 3.5 lb/ft³ or higher, low-step entry, non-slip base.
- 02Raised bowls only if your vet advises them — the evidence is mixed.
- 03Shorter, more frequent walks with a padded harness rather than a collar.
- 04Rugs or runners on hard floors do more for confidence than any supplement.
