Reading the Label: How Premium Dog Foods Actually Compare
We put ingredient decks, protein sourcing, and cost per 1,000 kcal side by side — then ran a blind palatability trial.

The verdict
Marketing language and price tell you almost nothing. Named protein first, clear kcal/kg, and a stable recipe do.

Cost per calorie, not per bag
Bag price is meaningless without energy density. A 3,600 kcal/kg food fed at 200g/day costs far less to run than a 3,100 kcal/kg food that needs 280g. We converted every product to cost per 1,000 kcal — the ranking changed completely.
Label red flags
Unnamed "meat and animal derivatives", ingredient splitting (peas, pea protein, pea fibre listed separately to push meat up the deck), and recipes that quietly change formula between batches. Brands that publish typical analysis per batch earned real credit here.
Transition slowly
Even an upgrade causes upset if rushed. Move over ten days, 10% at a time, and score stool daily. Any food is the wrong food if your dog cannot digest it.
Barking Brilliant buys everything it tests. We do not sell products and never take payment for a placement or a score.
