Solve time is the metric
A puzzle that occupies a dog for 90 seconds is a food bowl with extra steps. We timed 22 dogs on first exposure and again after a week; anything whose repeat solve time dropped below three minutes fell out of contention.
Chew safety
We gave each toy 20 unsupervised-style minutes with a heavy chewer. Two boards shed small plastic sliders — an immediate fail. Look for captive parts, thick walls, and no glued-in components.
Rotate, do not accumulate
Three good puzzles rotated weekly beat a cupboard of ten. Novelty, not quantity, is what keeps engagement high.
Barking Brilliant buys everything it tests. We do not sell products and never take payment for a placement or a score.
